But under the SSP umbrella, students live together in shared campus housing, participate in science-specific professional development and community building opportunities, and go on off-campus excursions ranging from theme parks to museums to white water rafting.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the summer, SSP aims to increase access to resources and information about graduate school, scientific research, conferences, and other career opportunities in STEM fields. SSP helps young scholars build professional networks and foster a sense of community within STEM research spaces, improve their ability to think creatively about research, and work within interdisciplinary and collaborative settings.<\/p>\n<p><small><em>Please note: Students do not apply to SSP directly. The focus of this 10-week program is mentored research as a member of a lab in fields including: Cell Biology, Molecular Biology\/Genetics, Microbiology, Developmental Biology, Biochemistry, Neuroscience, Genomics, Computational Biology. During the eight weeks, the students will be mentored by senior members in the Si lab to learn and practice the basics of experimental skills, including microfluidics, microscopy, and molecular cloning, or computational skills, including image analysis and data mining, and directly contribute to on-going research projects. During the program, the students will receive $4,480 as the stipend to cover the living expenses and travels.<\/p>\n\n<p>CP-SURP will participate in the CMU Mellon College of Science\u2019s Summer Scholarship Program (MCS SSP) which is also part of NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU). MCS SSP-REU is uniquely managed by a dedicated administrative team who develops and organizes a full schedule of activities for the students outside the lab. These activities include but are not limited to career development seminars, campus and city tours, networking events, and a research symposium.<\/p><\/div>\r\n\t\t\t\t\t<div
